The Institute for African Voice on AI upholds a research policy centered on integrity, inclusivity, and African values. The institute conducts all research with the highest ethical standards. Our policy promotes collaboration, innovation, and sustainable impact to address Africa's unique challenges through responsible AI development and to promote the equitable representation of the African voice in AI development and governance, while prioritizing the well-being of its diverse communities.
Current Research Projects
Decolonizing AI
Equitable share of AI research and develoment
This reasserch topic addresses the pressing need to re-examine and reshape the global AI landscape to ensure that all regions and cultures, particularly those historically marginalized, have a fair and influential role in the development and deployment of AI technologies. This research is essential because the current AI landscape is disproportionately driven by a few dominant players, often from the Global North who set the agenda, control the resources, and reap the benefits, while the Global South, particularly African nations, are often left out of meaningful participation

The main goal of this research is to establish frameworks and strategies for a more equitable distribution of AI research and development benefits across different regions, especially in underrepresented and underserved communities
Algorithmic Accountability
Combating the Harm of AI System
The research on "Algorithmic Accountability" addresses the urgent need to ensure that algorithms, particularly in decision-making, are transparent, fair, and accountable. As algorithms increasingly influence critical areas like finance, healthcare, and law enforcement, the potential for biases and errors can lead to unjust outcomes. This research emphasizes the importance of holding algorithm creators and users responsible for their impacts, ensuring that decisions are ethical and aligned with societal values.

Key goals of this research include developing frameworks for auditing algorithms, establishing ethical standards, and creating regulatory measures to enforce accountability. By focusing on these areas, the research aims to build trust in AI systems and ensure they contribute positively to society, preventing harm and reducing inequalities.
AI Governance
The African View
This research aims to propose AI governance frameworks that address the continent's distinct challenges and opportunities.
Key objectives include developing governance models that reflect African values, promoting inclusivity in global AI policy-making, and ensuring that AI benefits are equitably shared across the continent. By advocating for an African perspective, this research seeks to empower African nations to shape their own AI futures, ensuring that AI development aligns with their priorities and contributes to sustainable growth
AI for Africa's Sustainable Development
Innovation and Sustainability
The main objectives include identifying AI-driven strategies that can support economic growth, improve public services, and enhance environmental conservation. By focusing on sustainable development, this research aims to ensure that AI contributes positively to Africa's long-term prosperity, fostering inclusive growth and helping the continent meet its development targets in line with global goals like the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
